Hey guys, I was just installing the automatic headlamp kit from Ford as well as a new headlight switch for the auto headlights on my brother in laws 03 Supercrew. The problem that we ran into was that when the light sensor is covered the headlights come on even in the off position. Does anyone know what the problem is and/or how to remedy it? We're looking at having it work just like the factory equipped versions. I haven't been able to find anything on a forum search. Thanks for your help.
I think the kit you're using overrides the headlight switch. It can also provide Daytime Running Lights. The Ford accessories do not necessarily work like the factory installation, but are designed for (relatively) easy installation. I put one in my daughter's Expy, and that's how it works.
When I did mine, I also put in a new headlight switch with the "Auto" position, but I had to rewire it and the kit so that "Off" is really off, and the parking light position keeps the headlights off. This was complicated by my remote start/security system. I set it up so that the headlights would not be on when the engine cranks. Maybe there's an easier way, but the way I did it was quite involved, and frankly, not worth the trouble.
I guess if I had to do it over, I'd get out the shop manual wiring diagrams and reproduce the factory arrangement instead of buying the accessory. But that could be difficult too.
