I've had my '79 pickup for nearly two months now. All this time I would have to give it gas before it (truck) would warm up. After the truck would warm up, it would idle alright and start up as soon as you would hit the key, but let it set (not running) for a few hours, you'd probably burn the starter up or run the battery down if ya didn't give it no gas to drink. Alright yesterday, I had new steel tranny cooling lines put on and a brand new radiator put in today. Well what I had left of a fan shroud, I decided not to put back. So after putting the radiator in today and trying it (the truck) out, I noticed it Idled AWFUL fast, and didn't have to pump it (gas) NEARLY as long as I had been. Which is good in a way, but it seems too good. Cause at a red light or drive thru, it's like trying to hold back a bulldog on a chain with cat two feet in front of ya, with a T-Bone in the cats mouth. Know what I mean. Just wondering: 1: If the shroud made a difference. 2: If maybe the water (during topping it off) splashing on the fan blades slung it somewhere its not supposed to go. or 3: If the 'ol trucks not used ta gettin' all this attention of new things Any and All help appreciated
Well somewhere along the line you probably managed to get the choke unstuck. Someone had probably been messing with the idle screw instead of fixing the choke. You will now have to make some col/hot idle screw adjustments and use some more carb cleaner on it.
Find a proper fan shroud or your engine will overheat. Probably not until next summer tho. By that time you will have forgotten and you will be scratching your head... -hehe
