I am working on my 351w swap into a 1978 f100 where a 302 used to be(auto trans). I thought I might have enough slack with the 302 exhaust sytem to make it work on the 351w, but the passenger side pipe wants to hit on the firewall, so I am thinking about going with headers. the question is, what headers can I use, considering this engine was never offered in a truck? someone on here said something about shorty mustang headers, but what year would I need?....thanks again, Ben
Mustang shorties will hit the frame. They angle out at the bottom. I tried that once and it didn't work. Hooker should make some that fit. You may also want to try Dynomax.
I ran into this problem putting a 351 in my 78. I tried the mustang shorties. I had no prblem w/the frame but the drivers side header hit the linkage for the clutch. Really ticked me off. I endede up using manifolds from a crown vic. Try the guys that lx1man said. I called a few people but since the 351 never came in the truck I couldn't get a straight answer so I went w/the manifolds. Good luck!
I've got the same setup in a 71 and have givin up on trying to get longtubes to fit. I've tryied a cheep set from Advance auto and had the best luck with them. I could get them on with some moification to the rt side but it still hit the crossmember. They vibrated too much so I removed them. I recently bought a set of Hedmans off Ebay but had the same problem (actually worse)on the rt. side. I have a buddy who has a set of Sandersons on his 69 dragtruck. They are the shorty style. He had to notch the rt. frame rail for them to fit.
So after all the money I've wasted I'm loving my stock cast manifolds all the more.
