Talking Jetta TDI

Hi Everyone,

Been a while , with nice weather its hard to be inside. Here's my question, just purchased a new TDI Jetta last nite, very impressed. Anyone know of a VW Diesel forum??

Please help, need input, someone has to have chips or something for them.
Have a great day

Be firm on then replacing headlights for free for quite a while.

They are a known problem for Beetles & Jetta's

I hope you are aware of the enormous cost of MUST service of the fuel-injection system & other expensive things ?

When bringing it in for a LOF at a dealership, watch like a hawk and make sure they replace BOTH the filter and the oil. Some places will charge for both items and only change the oil.

I've have a 2000 TDI. Car is great with only a few problems. The EGR can clog up your intake, bad, I have seen some almost completely plugged. Also VW is very specific on what kind of oil you can use. Timing belts are the major expence, usually about $600.00-$800.00 to get done at the dealership, I think it is around a 5 hour job. You do not want skip it though, ask your dealer what a new engine costs if that belt breaks.

There are several places to get a chip, and you can significantly improve performance for a few hundred bucks. Remember these chips increase boost and more strain on your turbo which can lead to premature failure, if your careful they will be fine and you will be amazed at the power. It is not too hard to get these engines up over 150 hp with a lot of torqe but then you start running into problems associated with all that power, not different than anything else.

I have left mine stock, it is not a race car, but enough scoot along, especially on the highway, were that motor shines. There is not a mountain pass on the interstate that the car has to downshift to maintain speed. I take it over Donner pass on 80 and the Grapevine and it goes as fast as you want in top gear. I have not had any other car or truck that is able to do that.

I've been eyeing them, especially with reports of close to 50MPG. I'm a bit leary of VWs tho, as I think their reliability has gone down a bit.

Any idea of what the official factory maintenence costs?

VWs don't have the best reputation. Maintenance costs are higher on TDIs. May be stuck with dealer's service. Initial price is about $1,500 higher than gas models. If you put much more than average mileage on, it may be worth it.

My sister has owned an '81 diesel Jetta since new. 400,000 plus kilometers on it and going strong. Besides routine maintenance, it has needed glow plugs and a clutch.
Like Lee Iacocca says, if you can find a better car, buy it.
