I have a 2001 f350 dually 7.3 with a husky spring bar hitch and have just traded my springdale 260 tb (480 lb hitch weight) for a jayco jayflight 31bhs(960 lb hitch weight).I have not been using the spring bars with the springdale. I was wondering if I should now use the bars with the bigger hitch weight?
If I understand your question, and not knowing your Husky Hitch, I would think that using the spring bars makes sense with your heavier trailer.
Assuming your spring bars are the proper rating for your trailer, they should make the ride much smoother and more stable and safer.
I have driven my 30 foot 8,000# trailer with and without the spring bars on my Eaz Lift hitch set up. Without the bars, the ride is very bouncy and prone to a bit more sway. With the bars, my rig rides like it is on rails and there is much less rocking horse action on rough spots on the highway.
There is no reason I would drive more than a block or two without my spring bars hooked up.
BTW, if there is an anti sway bar option, that is worthwhile too. Helps the truck handle great in side winds and when being passed or passing a big rig.
Don't know how the bars are rated with your brand, but in general you want a set of bars that is about the same rating as your expected tongue weight. So from your posting your tongue weight is roughly 1,000#s. I would stick with a set rated at 1,000 or a tad over since we almost always load more than we think. Don't go with 750 or less and probably shouldn't go with the 2,000# bars. In one case the rig will ride soft and bouncy and in the other too stiff and jolting.
Thanks Jim, Just picked the new Jayco up today. The tech said nthe husky hitch was good but he did put a 10000# ball on it. I am setting at the campsite now and the new camper is GREAT! Thanks for your time and help. See you on the road!
