Post truck died and wont start

74 f100 302. Everyday driver. I was driving home from work. Sitting at stop light when truck died. Attempted to start. Seemed slow on turnover, like battery was low. Attempted numerous times to point where it started to smell like it was flooded. Got a jump from a Chebby but still did nothing. Went and had breakfast (work graveyard shift). Went back 1 1/2 hours later and still will not start. Tank is 3/4 full. It is just sitting in a parking lot now. Want some ideas of what it could be before I go back to attempt to fix it.

Battery/Alternator? Why didn't it start when jumped by other vehicle?

Fuel probs? Smells like its gettin some...

I've read about it on this site but no experience with... Coil?

Starter? It's turning the engine but wont start, besides why did it die in the first place.

All help appreciated.

First of all check your basics.
1. fuel? you said you smelled gas, but chesk anyway.
2. spark? have a friend hold a plug wire to find out.
timing light will also work.

After checking to see if you got spark and fuel flow if still nothing loosen the distributer bolt put it on boost and have some one turn it over and turn cap right-left to see if it catches if it does you might have jumped a cog on the timing chain

If you have spark and fuel squirts into the carb when you move the throttle I would go along with the timing chain has jumped a tooth. Do you have a lot of miles on it?

A buddy that is an old Ford man said it is common for the timing chain to jump when you are coming to a stop. The chain goes a little slack on deceleration. The engine bounces up and down with weight transfer and release. With a worn chain there just might be enough room to skip a tooth or two...

Thanks for using FTE!
