More horsepower for a 2.5L Ranger

dpdude86,
First of all, welcome to FTE.
Check out our Guidelines:

And the Read First: notices at the top of each forum, it will help you understand and navigate FTE easier.
Second, I was not aware of a 2.5l engine for the Ranger in the US. I could be wrong here, but are you talking about the 2.3l?
Are you looking at possibly fitting a turbocharger or supercharger to it for more power?
As for Mazda Miata parts working, I could be wrong, but I really doubt they would fit. They are seperate engines, gearboxes axles etc. Not to mention body panels and chassis.

Cool. I wasn't aware such an engine was available.
From the photos from your website of the original engine Greg, it doesn't appear that there is a whole lot of real estate in the engine bay, and the intake manifold gets air from the rear of the engine.
Looks like a turbocharger would be the easiest solution.

I have a 98 Ranger with the 2.5L engine. Some of the easiest and cheaper ways to get more horsepower out of the enigne are by simply adding a tornado kit, K&N air intake kit, and a Jet performance module all together they will give about a 70% horsepower increase along with about another 40% worth of torque. And the real bonus is they will increase your fuel milage at the same time. I have added all of these items to my truck and they have made a huge difference. Another more expensive way to get more horsepower is buy the highperformance engine rebuild kit that comes complete with pistons, rockers, lifters, cam, and crank. A couple of sites I have found useful for my ranger are truckperformance.com and stylingconcepts.com You can also buy a NOS kit for the engine that will give you between a 50horsepower boost up to a 300horsepower boost adjustable in 25horsepower increaments. These are just a few suggestions I have based on what I have done to my own Ranger minus the NOS kit. I am pumping out more horsepower than the stock 4.0L 6cyl with all the mods I have done to my 2.5L so if you are willing to invest the time and money the mods are worth it

Tornado?
DpDude,
I don't want to come across as a jerk, arrogant or a know-it-all, but that Tornado is the biggest waste of money in the WORLD. You might as well take your $29.95, or whatever it goes for these days, and EAT IT...you'll get the same amount of horsepower.
The K&N is a great idea, in fact, that's the FIRST thing I do whenever I get a new vehicle. Jet chips are pretty good, but you might want to check with Doug over at ********* (blocked out by the stupid filter, PM me and I will give you the information), he writes a tune SPECIFICALLY for your truck and modifications. After I installed my supercharger, I used one of his tunes and it purs like a cat.
Also, you're more likely looking at 20-40 horsepower with a K&N + computer mod on your engine. I don't know where in the heck that character got 70%, but that's positively insane.
If you really want to make power, add a supercharger. Sure, it's expensive, but it's also the easiest way to make a ton of horsepower. If you can afford it, that's definitely the way to go.
Another suggestion, in addition to the K&N and computer mod, is a free-flowing exhaust. Your engine is basically an air pump. The easier the air gets in (intake) and out (exhaust), the more efficient it will be...the more efficient it is, the more horsepower it makes.
Do NOT buy the tornado though!! I sure wish I had invented that stupid thing, that guy is making a killing off of people who are uninformed/ignorant.
Have a nice afternoon.

Thanks. When I first read that, I thought I was in trouble. haha
I have yet to see a dyno test that shows that you gain horsepower with a tornado/turbnado or whatever name they're going by this week. In fact, the principle of the whole thing is silly. You are trying to have FEWER restrictions and things that impede the flow of air into the intake...so WHY would you stick something that surely blocks air inside your intake tube/airbox? That's just goofy. If you want a "vortex" inside your engine (which is what the turdnado CLAIMS to make), go buy a chevy VORTEC!
Anyone who thinks those work can c'mon over with their turdnado and we can have a little race...I'm sure I can peddle my big, bad bicycle faster than a truck with a blocked-off intake.
