I'd like to shake the guys hand driving his SD up that 45 degree incline!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. It is a good point though. I won't even park a 3000 lb car on an incline without the parking break. Seen to many broken/mangled park tabs.

That's what I forgot to mention - that unless on totally level ground, and even then, if people are around or it's somewhere it can kill someone easily, on goes the parking brake.

The other good part about always using your parking brake is.........it always works and releases because like all mechanical things, if they are not used they will seize up and we have all known people who never use their parking brakes and then one day they need to use it, but guess what , when they release the brake, it doesn't fully release, causing all kinds of little nasties. The companies that make linings and other brake parts absolutely love people that use their parking brakes once a year.

Man, once again the IDIOTS ruin it for the rest of us.

ESOF - my '99 has this, and the 4WD light comes on immediately (in high range) when you flip the lever. Based on some burnout tests on a dirt road, the front hubs didn't engage until sometime later.

Given that the shift-indicator light on my '65 Toyota Land Cruiser pickup doesn't come on until the vacuum assembly has moved the shift fork, tell me that Ford isn't so stupid that they have the 4WD light come on before any of the hubs/xfer case have actually engaged? This is bad engineering.

I bought this truck used, so have no one to blame, but the casualness of the ESOF (esp. going into 4-LO) is absurd. If I smoked, I could have a cigarette half consumed before the 4-LO engagement takes place. I don't think the former owners used the 4WD much, so I plan to exercise it regularly.

The light comes on only when the transfer case engages, not the hubs...

The hubs usually take a revolution or so to engage. If it takes longer, take them apart and lube them up really good. Mine were pretty dry, but after clean and lube, they shift within a couple feet.
