Hey guys I have a buddy who has a 76 f350 crewcab. The VIN number is
F35JCB25392 This is a 2wd 1ton longbox crew cab, with the Ranger XLT package. The truck is in very original condition. It has not been restored yet but wouldn't take much because everything is still there. He wants to convert this to a 4 wheel drive. I Think he is an idiot and think the truck should remain in it's original form. I keep telling him that if he wants a 4wd crew that he should find one or convert a 2wheel that is not in such original shape. He won't believe me but said that if I ask you guys your opinion and you agree he would reconsider..
so guys what do you think????
Your not gonna like this answer but here goes. My plans are to find a good crewcab cab and strech the frame on my f250 to install it. Which isnt hard Ive already been involved in streching f350 dumptruck frames. My reasons for doing this are A] 4x4 crewcabs are very hard to find around my area B] ford only made 73-79 crewcab 4wds with 6 foot beds I must have the 8 footer C] a 79 4wd crewcab with an 8 foot box will be unique Im sure somebody did it but Ive yet to see one. My personal opinion is 2wd crewcabs are only cool for race car/truck tow vehicles. Sorry you asked. Andy
Here goes some knowledge I found with the 67-72 Crews(should be close to the 73-79's)
My 69 crew 4x4 has a totally differnt front frame rails then the
2wd,the 2wd crews use coils in the front the 4x4's have leaf sprung axles, the crossmembers uder the cab and box are not as strong as the ones on a 4x4 they are thinner and only use 3 rivets to attach to
the frame then 4 of them with a 4x4, i'm assuming thats for the
twisting of the frame that most 4x4's do. The rear shocks on
a 73-79 2wd mount differently then a 4x4, etc etc..
Now me being a diehard crewcab lover of the 67-72 vintage, I would
not do this to these trucks since there hard enough to find in either 2x4 or 4x4, but if he has to do it, he could always cut off a front
frame rail from a f-250 4x4 and graft it in to the 2x4 frame.. I
also heard the 4x4 supercab frame is close to a crewcab frame??
Not sure on that
It does bother me that he is going to do it, but what bothers me more is the truck that he is going to do it to is in such beautiful original shape. I have offered to buy him another f350 crew and some cash for the one he has. the other one is a lot rougher as far as originality goes so it wouldn' hurt my feelings as bad.
