I have a '49 F3 w/ flat 8. Oil or grease splatters from behind fan and pulley.
My manual says that no lube is required but my mechanic says it is?
Any input?

Looks like the oil is coming from the point on the hub where it mounts.
I did remove the screw and nothing dripped but was wet with oil.
Maybe it was overfilled and now most has ended up inside the hood and on the engine!
I'll keep an eye on it but am afraid I may have to pull it ...soooo tired of splattering oil!

Not yet....looks like I will have to take the fan and hub off , clean them and start over.
Just been super busy lately , but soon!

 

You might want to install a repair kit from Mac's

 

I looked on-line and in my Macs catalog but didn't see a repair kit?

 

Sorry, I have the 226 6 cylinder in my 51 with the fan on the water pump.and I totally forgot your 8 has the two water pumps with the independent fan, I'm brain dead I guess. I will look, and if I come across a kit for the fan I will let you know.
Look in Mac's Early Ford 1932 to 1948 catalog, they list Fan Spindle Mounting Bearing And Gaskets
Also LMC Truck Parts Catalog has the fan bearing and gaskets listed in there catalog.

OK I found it I think, it's the Oil Filled Pulley And Hub Assy for a 48 to 52 Pickup. Part #21A-8603 @ $59.95

Wow ....you are fast!
I looked it up and that is the part.
Looked at mine and between the pulley and the mounting bracket (#'s 5 & 6 in the LMC catalog) there is what looks like a fiber type 1/4" gasket...that is where the oil is coming from. I don't see that called for in any catalog. I think that the mechanic who did the rebuild got some bad info when it came to that part. Other than this small but troublesome problem the engine is great.
I thought that it would eventually run out of oil to splatter but that doesn't seem to be happening. The mechanic will be back next week so I can ask him about it.

Brian, I'm glad to have been able to help you out. I work as a swimming pool operator for the city. I have Bell & Gossett pumps that transfer hot water from the boiler through the heating system. The pumps have an oil reservoir to lube the pump shaft. If I don't keep them full of oil they will seize up. I would hate to be out for a drive in your truck and have that fan seize. (just a thought)

Rod, And a good thought it is....I wouldn't really run it dry...just my frustration talking!
I ordered the assembly last night. Will let you know when I have it back on the road.
And hopefully soon some photos.
