I have an 02 XLT with the V8 engine. Just recently it has begun making a noise that sounds like 'marbles' rattling around in the engine. Not so noticable with the hood open but much louder under fender and in the passengar compartment itself. I have found that it mostly does it while in gear and moving. The noise stops completely after hitting about 35 mph....stops as soon as it shifts into 4th or 5th gear (not sure which). Up until then....it sounds like it has no oil...you can hear it coming.
Any ideas on this would be appreciated. Haven't figured out if I have an engine issue, a tranny/torque converter issue or just a loose exhaust or something somewhere underneath. Also...unless I'm just being stupid....I can't find a trans fluid dip stick anywhere.

Well, you're not stupid, Ford was. There is no Tranny dipstick on your motor, they thought it would help keep out dirt. I have the same setup, 02 XLT with v8, and although I have enough of my own problems, I don't have what you described. Hopefully someone else here can help.

Thanks for the info NEITZ....this definitely isn't the first problem. Been through the rear end noise, back lift gate issue and all 4 window motors replaced. Starting to this this issue could be the final bad omen....
I know what you mean. I just had a new rear put in this Spring, and the recall on the liftglass done to fix that problem. I have my own noise that I have been dealing with, but it doesn't sound as detrimental as yours. I went for a drive with the Ford Tech and he said he heard it, but couldn't tell me what it was. Since it drives within spec and there is nothing in the computer, there was nothing they were going to do. I had a 99 sport that I dearly miss. I like the ride and the room in these newer ones, but they sure didn't do their homework. Good luck.
I had a similar noise. It got progressively worse. I hope you do not have the problem I had. Timing Chain Adjuster. I was covered under the ESP. Hope your is not the same.
hey man, i've got the same explorer. i had the same type of noise as well. i took it to the stealership and the torque converter was bad. i hope this helps.
Hey OTPRACER100.....I thought about the torque converter as well since it happens under power/in gear but mysteriously stops after the shift to 4th gear and the RPMs drop back down. Once I get on the gas and go to a lower gear...the noise comes back until it again shifts into 4th.
Did yours do much the same? How much $$ to fix the TC issue?
well luckily i bought an ex warranty so it cost me $100 for the deductible. mine was wierd, it would do it when on the gas hard under a load, like climbing a hill,or when stopped in gear with the brake on. i hope you get it figured out. good luck!
