Tips for replacing the Bank 2, Sensor 1 O2
Well, the proverbial P0153 finally showed up on my 97 4.0 SOHC Explorer. Guess I could back probe the connector to convince myself that the voltage range is fried.
Anyway, you'd know that out of the 4 O2's on board, this one is pretty buried up next to the oil filter and on top of the exhaust manifold on the passenger side.
How do you guys get at this one? Any tips to share? Thanks.

Gibsonj, actually bank 2 is the driver's side, so the number 1 sensor may be easier to reach on that side.
Bank 1 is the bank with the number 1 cylinder, which is the passenger side on most Fords. Obviously bank 2 is the other (drivers) side.
A 'slow response' code means the sensor is getting lazy, and a new one should fix the problem.
good luck.

Thanks, guys. I had the code read at Autozone--don't have the print out in front of me. But the guy at the counter said it was for the upstream sensor on the passenger side. I may have stated the wrong bank in my post.
Anyway, assuming that its the upstream sensor on the passenger side, maybe taking the tire off and the inner fender might be the way to go. Hadn't thought of that, but it might just give an access path to at least get an O2 socket on it.
Thanks.

Gibsonj, P0153 is "O2 sensor circuit slow response, bank 2 sensor 1. (This is the driver's side upstream sensor.)
The passenger side upstream sensor - slow response, bank 1 sensor 1, would be code P0133.
I'm listing this FYI, because sometimes parts techs get confused too, just like the rest of us.....

yes i just did my 00 ranger (a ranger is an explorer with a damn truck bed) and its the same there... i did bank one sensor 2 and it was the passenger side,
also some only have 3 sensors, if it says bank one or 2 senser 2 and there is only one on the back cat, then its the single sensor... here is a pic of the 3.0 o2 sensors
this is the 3.0 but the 4.0 will be the same in this ocasion

A little late to this thread
Only about 5 years late, but I had the same error code...just wondering if I reset this error, should I expect it to come back again as it seems that the problem should be recurring? I guess I am wondering if maybe it just got a bad reading once or something triggered that, but it may not really be a problem? If it is a real problem and I need to replace the sensor, should I expect the light to come back on? Hopefully this isn't a dumb question...

5yrs late and still valid, yes if you reset, the CEL will come back if the O2 is defective.
Connect a computer and read the live data.......

Well 7 years later from the OP.....
I have a P0133 code. Bought the 02 sensor and short of taking the exhaust system off I have no idea how to change the 1st 02 sensor on the passenger side.
I looked thru the search function and didn't see anything explaining this (maybe I just over looked) it.
TIA,
Craig

where is bank 2 sensor 1
The same code came up on my 1996 f-150 xl 4.9l P0155 I know there is three o2 sensors but I can't figire out where the bank 2 sensor 1 is .I know sensor one means upstream so there is now two sensors up stream .one on each manafold . Witch sensor is it the one on the manafold closer to the firewall or the one on the manafold closer to the radiator? Can anyone help me please ?
