I am starting to put together a 460 for my 77 f250 4x4. My question is: Is a valley pan needed on a 77 460? If one is not needed is it worth it to add one? Please let me know the facts and your opinions. Thanks.
If you are using the heat riser cross over in the intake manifold, then yes you need too. If your manifold has no crossover or you use a blockoff kit, then no. The valley pan keeps oil off the hot exhaust cross over passage under the carb which burns the oil and causes nasty build up.
The oil is not nearly as hot as the exhaust cross over passage. I alway ran a valley pan, even when I blocked the cross over for racing. In that case it does help keep the manifold cooler.
