Howdy Folks,
I'm in the middle of an MSD 6A install using the magnetic Ford pickup and MSD coil. Every connection has been checked many times and all seems correct till I hook up the negative on the coil. At that point I lose my 12 volt and it goes to 4.7 or so. Poor spark when tested and the voltabe jumps to 8 volts when cranking.
Any idea? I replaced the MSD module with a new one and same stuff, switched coils and no change and I've noticed that the ignition switch is warm when the key is left on for a while (10-15 min.)
I'm thinking ground problems and am going to reconnect the grounds today.
How are you running the box? Do you have it as a stand alone or did you try to run it and the durafart box at the same time? You problem sounds fishy, I had no problems hooking mine up (MSD as standalone). You run the large RED(+) and BLACK(-) to the battery right? You connected the smaller red wire to what used to be the positive signal going to the coil? Connect the orange (FROM MSD)to the (+) on the coil and the smaller black (FROM MSD) to the (-) on the coil. Disregard (cap) the old negative wire that used to go to the coil, same with white off the MSD. I used the connector harness to plug into the dizzy. That's it. The install directions have a schematic or you can check their website. I found I had to lengthen almost all the leads to mount the box in the old durafart box location (with exception to the dizzy connector)I have an extra dizzy harness for the MSD (PN 8869)still in the box - I'll sell it cheap if interested. Good Luck.
You should not have 12 volts at the coil if using the MSD by itself. When it fires, it sends pulses up to 500 volts into the coil. The coil is now a step up transformer. Let us know how you have it connected.
Just got in and it's too late to go out and check how it's wired up. Will check it out and keep you posted. Thanks for the step by step. I think that that's how it's hooked up but I'll check tomorrow. Might be hooked up right and have a fritzy ignition switch or maybe even a poor battery to ground connection.
Talk to ya tomorrow.
Pat
Thanks again to the folks for the input on the MSD install. Called MSD and was amazed that the info. on the old instruction sheet that I had, has been changed. Well to make a long story short, it's up and running and the spark generated by the MSD has made even my leather handed buds not want to hold onto it. Crackles like a welder during tests.
