Checking tranny fluid

Ok this might sound like a stupid question but i was checkin the gf's tranny fluid today and she asked me why I check it with the car running and i was like umm i don't know thats just the way its done can anyone tell me why its done that way does it have something to do with the levels being different

With an automatic, you leave the engine running since the tranny needs to pump fluid thru all the passages and fill the torque converter. If the engine is not running, most of the fluid drains back to the pan but it is inconsistent how much gets back.

It is also important to follow the instructs with regards to temperature, shift sequence, level etc.
