Rear Axle Bearing Play

I have a 1990 F-150 with 8.8 rear axle. The truck has 200,000 miles and as far as I know, there has been no work done to the rear axle or even the rear brakes.

Today, I was checking my rear brakes, and while I was in there, I decided to place a dial indicator on the axle shaft flange and measure the radial play and the axial play. The radial play was about 0.006 or 0.007", while the axial play was about 0.022" or so.

Does this seem excessive, or is it normal? I couldn't find any wear specs in any of my books, so I'm asking you guys what you know.

My rear brakes need to be replace badly, so I'll be doing that some time within the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering if I should be replacing the bearings and seals as well. The seals don't leak....yet....

Thanks,

Matt

Probably not too much play but it will be easy to check by eye. Do the brakes one side at a time so you can compare them with each other and if not, take poloroids or have a good book. Once the brakes are off, go ahead and pull the axle, I think you will have four bolts that hold it in. Then you can check the bearing/race on each side for abnormal wear. In order to replace those 3 dollar seals on the end of your axles you will have to have the old bearings cut off and new ones pressed on, after the seal. So, if they aren't leaking, be careful.
