I have a Short Box 1977 F100 with a Small Block V8 I dont know much about the truck since I just bought it, but I am hopeing to learn more about it. I have some questions for anyone who has done this or knows what I am trying to do. I want to make this truck into somthing I can drive daily yet make it quick and fun to drive. I am planing on buying a new carburator but im not sure what kind? It is a 3 on the tree and I wanted to put an automatic tranny in it with a hurst shifter, is that possible?I also put a glass pack on it and it sounds great. I guess you could say I am going for the Street Rod performance and look. So anything anyone has to say will help me. Thanks
Dave,
You don't sound like much of a racer right now.
Do you have a 302 with a 2 barrel? If so you've got alot of choices, if you want to haul ***.
Start with exhaust. It will be your biggest gain for the least money.
Second, go with intake and carb. Keep your carb around 600CFM the 302 can't use much more than that.
Cam is next. Heads after that, then Pistons, You could always go to the nitrous if your not worried abotuthe motor.

RaceDave -- I'll have to pipe in and suggest for glasspax - try the Thrush 48" mufflers or the Cherry-bombs..... heh heh heh....I get lots of people honking at me when I rev up next to them if they've done something nasty on the road - know-what-I-mean?....plus the are low back-pressure and sound most excellent.
Just make sure you behave yourself on the throttle around the most excellent police!!.....
Well I am running dynomax heddars with 3" exhaust and 4" dynomax Bullit mufflers, you can rev that up and the birds get scared, the crane cam don't hurt with .524 lift
I already have a glass pack on it, sounds great nice and loud but not to loud, I wanted to know what type of intake and carb I sould buy? I am limited to a 2000$ budget for now, and im not to worried about lowering it yet I want to do more to the engine at the moment. I am planing on buying rims and some 60's series tires for the rear. anyone else have any more input? thanks so far but I need more!!!
I got headers and straight pipes that sound great when your going hallen *** through town .... you just really got to watch for the police , they might frown on it. good luck

THE HEART BEAT JUST STOPED
Well I would go with an Edelbrock performer or a Edelbrock performer RPM intake with a Holly 600cfm 4 barrol carb. I would stick to the 3spd but maby switch it to the floor.
Good luck.
actualy I like the automatic tranny but,,,, if there is a way that I can convert it to a floor shift that would be great.... but I have heard some bad things about the shift kits"hard to find the gears and that kinda things"? I would like it if there was a way to put in a shift kit that is like the hurst shifter? im not sure if anyone knows what im talking about? but yeah.... like that. if anyone knows what im talking about please tell me if there is a way to do what I want!! and thanks for the info on the carburator
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Dec-02 AT 10:54 PM (EST)]I believe that B&M makes a floor shifter that is taller for a truck(Automatic). As does Lokar.
If you do not want to do alot of adjusting on the carb, I would suggest an Edelbrock 600 carb and Edelbrock Performer(not RPM) intake. The stock motor won't make much power over 4800 rpm, so the RPM intake is pointless, unless you want to lose some low end torque. If you want to install a larger camshaft, I wouldn't suggest anything bigger than a CompCams 268h. With small cubic inches(302) and a heavy truck(Over 4000 lbs) You need all of the torque that you can get. Add 1 1/2" tube long style headers with no larger than 2 1/4" Dual exhaust and it should run pretty good.
I am also starting to look at exhausts for my 74 100 with a 360 stock everything at the moment.
I run 2 1/2" straight pipes with glasspack mufflers on my turbo cars to reduce backpressure to aloow quicker spool up.
It sounds like you guys are saying this is cool for a normally aspirated V8, do you not want some back pressure or do something like stock headers give enough?
Hurst also makes shifters. I am using a V-Matic-2 in my truck. Check out Summit or Jegs online and request a catalog. Their sites also have manufacturer links.
Thanks for using FTE!
