I have a 92 f150 xlt 2x4 5.0L regular cap and I was wondering what type of back end do I have, what gear ratio, just want to know has much has possible to the drivetrain has I can
I am pretty sure that this will work. You can roughly calculate your diff. ratio by jacking up the rear end and supporting the axle on stands. Place the beast in nuetral and then go to the back end. Slowly turn the rear tire and count how many times the driveshaft turns for a complete rotation of the rear tire. You have to make sure that your stop and start points for the tire rotation are the same. If the driveshat turns 3.5 turns for a complete tire rotation then you would likely have a 3.55 rear end. If I'm wrong on this some one else jump in quick.
Also, are you sure that there is no tag on the rear end? I know on my truck it is completely flat against the housing and buried under road spooge. It can be really hard to see and find. Take a second loook at each of the bolts that are on the rear end.
Oh yeah, dosen't the VIN number also contain information about the rear end ratio? At least with the VIN you could maybe run it through FORD and they would be able to tell you what the truck originally came equipped with.
If you have a tag on a bolt on the rear axle look at the first 3 digits on the bottom row of numbers - that should be the ratio for a Ford axle. Hope this works.
Since you have a XLT--and if you have a tachometer--tell us the size of tire that you have and the type of transmission--and then tell us what RPM the engine is turning at 60 MPH in top gear--and we then will be able to tell you what axle ratio you have.
All F150s of that vintage had 8.8 inch,31 spline, Ford Corporate rear axles.
I have a 92 4x2 300 six w/ 5spd. the rear end is of course an 8.8. the ratio is 2.73:1. ( code 12) on door jam. YES your vin tells you. give me your vin# and I'll get back to you. PS if you have your owners manual you can do this yourself!
Wow, there's a lot of wrong information in this thread.
- the VIN does not contain any information about the rear axle ratio.
- the above method for calculating the gear ratio is slightly incorrect.
- you have an 8.8" rear axle. No doubt about it.
The one thing that's right is that the axle ratio will be on that tag. But sometimes someone will change the fluid and leave the tag off. If that's the case, do this:
Leave it in neutral, and jack ONE tire off the ground. Spin it around once, count the number of driveshaft revolutions, and divide by two.
Common ratios are: 2.73, 3.08, 3.55, and (rare) 4.10.
