Question 1984 351w carb leaking gas

I have gas dripping out of the front of my carb onto my manifold. A friend said it is the accelerator pump diaphram. Carb tag says E4TE ADA (what carb is this?). Can I replace the diaphram without pulling the carb (till I get a chance to rebuild it or buy a replacement....any suggestions here would also help, stay w/ 2bbl or go to a 4bbl). More info if needed.....4-speed....3.81:1 gears(I think?)...87,000 mi, all original, getting 10-11 mpg(good?) Any help or comments about improvements to engine would be very apprecitated. Thanks, Dave PS. new user here....Does this text thing have spell check? Could not find it if it does.

If you can find a resonable replacement intake and convert to 4v(keep it around 600cfm) is a good upgrade. The primaries are 1/3 the size, and if you have a light foot you'll notice a decent increase in fuel mileage, but it allows a bit more power on tap for those need to hit the fuel situations, gas mileage suffers with the foot to the floor, so drive accordingly.

I'd recommend looking at a cam/lifter/pushrod replacement at the same time, and upgrade to a decent rv cam in and around the 260/270 dual pattern style cam from a good manufacturer. My fave is Comp cams. You're almost there with the intake off, so going a little further isn't to much more work, while at it, grab a decent pre-stressed timing chain assembly and replace it as well, you'll have it off anyways. A gasket kit won't hurt either, as you'll need to replace a few in the process, and a kit is cheaper than buying individually.

If you stick with the 2v carb, the acellerater pump is replaceable by itself, and comes with most rebuild kits. May as well rebuild it and do the replacement in the process.

The 2v is a very reliable carb, but it's 550 cfm, and that's where the 600 cfm 4v really comes on in the mileage departement, if your driving habits are easy on the fuel feed.

Just my 2 cents.

i dont know if you have the TFI/ECC-4 computer with a feedback carb. if you do i suggest converting to a duraspark 2 system and a regular carb. duraspark has a round ignition coil while the TFI/ECC4 had a square coil. i went from the usual 10mpg to around 14mpg, along with gutting the cats(see sig).
you dont have 3.81:1 gears, they were never made, closest to that is 3.73:1 gears.
the accel pump diaphram is $9 by itself while the entire carb kit is around $30.
while you can upgrade the engine, i think it has enough pep with just a few cheap mods but could use more sometimes, just change over to duraspark2 and a regular carb, remove all emissions stuff(if allowed and not working), open up exhaust, enjoy.
does your state require emissions testing?
also the 2bbl came in many cfm flowratings, my original carb was stamped 1.08 or 287cfm and i upgrade to a 1975 carb with a 1.21 or 351cfm rating.

Thumbs up Thanks for the input

Just finished replacing the accelerator pump diaphram and all is well. I use the truck as a daily "work truck" so down time is critical especially for any major engine mods. Will probably just stick to simple weekend upgrades. We do have emission testing here in Colorado. Just checked the diff, Ford 9" w/ 3.50:1 gears, the owners manual says to start out in 2nd(unless towing) and shift into 4th at 25 mph and its pretty much the way it drives. Need to change the gears out. It does have the EEC-IV feedback carb. Any input on using a K&N filter, platinum +2 or +4 plugs. I will look into the duraspark2 upgrade. Once again...Thanks for the input. Dave

A weekend upgrade(to me) would be a cam and lifter change, and a 4 barrel carb, but you'd definitely need the duraspark II ignition system along with it.

Take some time, read up on the conversion for the ignition, collect the parts, and get a bud to help out if need be. You'll find those the most use-able mods you could ever make, especially for a work truck. They'll provide more power where you use it everyday, and better mileage.
