Need Stiffer Springs or Should I Cut coil springs ?
I need some new coil springs but I would like some stiffer ones and retain the stock ride height and the only stiffer springs I can get are of the lifted variety so I was wondering if I could cut them at an angle in a bandsaw or with the abrasive cut-off saw.

Depends on the configuration of the spring end you are looking for. The end many times must be a specific shape. A coil spring shop should be able to fix you up with what you need.

If you must cut the springs, use a saw or pnuematic grinder/cutter. Do not use a torch. There have been incidents at our local dirt tracks around the country where drivers would use a cutting torch on their springs. Sure it lowers the vehicle and makes the spring seem stiffer, but the extreme heat weakens the metal and doesn't take time under harsh conditions for something bad to happen.

I too had a problem with the front end sagging. So I took the front coil springs off my 74 3/4 ton and cut them down to size with a die grinder. I used the ford manual on front ends to determine the ride height adjustement on the front I-Beam to the frame. The measurement came out to be approximately 3 1/2 inches. This change allows the front end to be stiffer while going into a turn. If this is not the way to go, I also ordered , for another truck, a set of springs from a local parts store through the TRW brand. They had a complete listing for this application.

Mistro,
There are so many different spring application available for a Twin I-beam that there must be something off the shelf for you to use. When these springs get old they not only sag but they get soft to.
Surprisingly, a "sprung" coil appears taller next to the replacement coil. Don't let this fool you when selecting a replacement.
Ask the guy at your local parts house to bring them allout and compare them all. For 1/2 ton, I'm a big fan of the F150 heavy dutry coil. The lift is only slightly over the F100 height and the stiffness is quite noticeable.
Consider it,

For that lean in turns try a stabilizer bar. You can use stock type bars or you can go to a racer shop and buy parts for a custom one. A stiff spring will cause a harsh ride. The guys above are right, -never use a torch on springs, they will break! Always put a stiffer stabilizer bar on the front than on the back or you will get some odd steering problems.
