Tranny Fluid Question
Alright.. here's the deal... the dipstick says mercon 5 (IV) the haynes manual says plain mercon.... it's for a 99 ranger. what's the deal? or should i just ask a dealer? i'm sure one of you will know.

definately use the mercon 5. Even if the truck originally came with the regular mercon i would suggest a full fluid flush. My mom had a 97' t-bird and the tranny had a shuttering problem. The dealer said there was a TSB to do a full flush with mercon 5 to solve the problem and it did. I change my power steering and manual trans fluid, and put in the mercon 5 and havent had any problems.

Mercon V... also make sure it REALLY IS mercon V and not the "multipurpose fluid" some companies make that claim is compatible with Mercon V.
The owner's manual may be referring to the transmission or transfer case, which usually use only Mercon.
