Oil splatters
I have a '49 F3 w/ a flat 8 that I had rebuilt by a local mechanic. Just behind the fan and pulley it splatters oil/grease when running. My manual says that there is no lubrication required. Any ideas? The mechanic says that it is lubed and that he will take care of it but just trying to figure what the problem is as he seems confused by it.

Could be the fan hub bearing. The fan runs on its own shaft that needs to be lubricated through the slot headed bolt hole on the fan hub. One or two ounces of motor oil is fed into the hole when it's in the "up" position, then the fan is rotated to put the hole pointing down. Any excess oil will run out (have something available to catch it). Then the bolt is screwed back into the hole.
It's likely that the oil or grease you see might be from overfilling, or not replacing the little bolt, or from damaged seals.
