Manual Tranny went, Rebuild?
My manual trans went in my 1985 F-150. I think it's the TOD trans from pictures. 2nd gear was making a grinding noise whenever the trans was in that gear. I pulled it out today and you can grab the output and input shafts and pull them apart maybe an 1/8 of an inch and wiggle them around. Does anyone know of where I can get a rebuild kit and a manual or video to do this myself? This will be my first time dealing with the insides of a tranny. It's not my daily driver though, Just my mule to pull the trailer and go to the dump. So i'm not hurried for time or afraid if things go awry.

Is it a 4 speed OD trans, or a low first gear job?

Do you have a juice clutch or mechanical?
I was quoted $500 to rebuild my 4 speed "smod" OD trans. A ZF would be over $1000, best as I can tell. I am leaning towards upgrading to a 5 speed, but have put it off as mine is just making noise and it's not a daily driver.
I did a google search for "t170 rebuild" and came up with this:

good luck.

Here is a better site if you didn't find it already. Don't know about the rebuild book or instructions.

I would see if there is a local transmission shop near you that you can get the kit from, because when you open it up you may find that you need to replace something else (like a bad synchro) which they would probably be able to supply you with right then. Also, invest in a set of lock-ring pliers (+/- $15)--makes your life a lot easier--some drifts/punches, and one of those 99cent telescoping magnets to retrieve stuff from the bottom when they invariably fall in ....
As I said, the t-18 is similar, but there are some differences here and there. For example, getting the input shaft out was not so easy. There is an internal fork that rides on a small shaft midway up on the side of the case. This fork made it difficult to get the input shaft out without a lot of manipulation and effort. I later realized you could take the fork out which made things much easier. There is a small pin that holds the fork onto the shaft. I punched it out and then slid the shaft over, then got the fork off.
Take pictures as you go so you can remember how things looked/went. As you pull parts out, keep them well organized, and try to keep the work space clean, etc., etc. Give us an update on how things go--and if I can help....

The winter before last I had the same thing happen in my 84 F150 4wd. I have the NP435 with granny low first. The truck was becoming hard to shift, I could hear growling/ whining noises coming from the tranny every time I would shift it. I was able to get a master rebuild kit from Bronco Graveyard (cost $165), it came with all new bearings, syncro rings, snap rings, gaskets, seals, ... everything but the gears. They carry a variety of overhaul kits for the various manual trannys and transfer cases Ford used. Check out their website at www.broncograveyard.com. The rebuild wasn't too difficult, I just carefully took it apart, cleaned and inspected all the parts; then laid them out on a clean work bench. I just took my time and reassembled it in reverse to how I took it apart, getting shift forks lined up was a bit of a headache. Once it was back together I painted it with Hi-temp gloss black engine paint. Before I stuffed the tranny back into the truck I had the flywheel resurfaced, installed a new pilot bearing, clutch disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. After that it shifted like a brand new truck. You could go that route and rebuild your tranny, or if you don't use the truck very often; or even are concidering selling the truck later you could buy a used one from a boneyard. Hope this helps, good luck.
