I found a truck for sale $4,500 '58 F-150 4x4 conversion, 4 speed granny tranny with a brand new 292 V8. First off, when were 292's made? would this be a factory engine replacement or retro-fitted?
I know it's an older low tech engine, no speed demon or powerhouse, but what are the torque and HP figures for the 292?
Is there any decent aftermarket support for this engine?

The trans should be a warner T98 a very strong trans but not a fast shifter.
y blocks were made from 54 to 64
it is a factory engine for a 58 but so was a 6 cylinder

All engines are low tech these are built strong. They do have solid lifters. It seems to have lots of torque down low it can be wound up to get the speed out of it. It pulls good.
Is there any decent aftermarket support for this engine?
mmm were to start ? The 292 y is a very stong motor it will pull the f150 nices , i have one of the last one ( 1964) and it is in a f 700 it pulls 10,5 ton around ok i think you will love it please if you need any help get back to me ok , thats what we are here four to keep the old ford,s on the road
My experience with 292's is limited to two vehicles. One is a ton truck we use for hauling grain on the farm. The other is in my 1960 Galaxie. I have found them to be durable and torquey. Iam building a 292 for my '59 F-100. It is .040 over with stock pistons, a mild cam, and will have three dueces (I imagine a small four barrell would probably work better performance wise, but it is a nostalgia thing!) I will also be using headers and dual exhaust. A 292 has a unique sound, very pleasing with a pair of glasspacks! There are a lot of different factory heads for the motors.
I am anxious to see what kind of punch a mildly modified Y-Block has!
