I'm did an engine rebuild of my I6 300, and while I have it already off, I figure I'll go ahead and put a new water pump on while its convenient. Usually, I get auto parts at Auto Zone, but I'm really not impressed with their products. I was just going to see what you guys prefer when it comes to water pumps..like brands and where to get them and the like. I'd rather spend a little more money if its going to make it work with better performance and last longer.
i replaced my water pump about 7000 miles ago with a $30, brand new unit from AutoZone. Nothing stood out as ultra-crappy when i was inspecting it, and its held up so far, so i can say i'm very happy with it.
One thing has changed about purchasing parts store water pumps. Just a few years ago most pums sold were rebuilt and there was a core program. That way most of the time you got a reconditioned OEM pump. Price differences were based on warranty.
Now your "lifetime warranty" pumps many times are new. Not rebuilt. So the whole thing is stampted out of whatever kind of metal, in whatever foreign country, with whatever kind of quality control standards. Now, the lesser warranty like 2 yr. is still a rebuilt core POSSIBLY at least rebuilt in the USA. Hard to say which is really the better deal whan you think about this. A water pump is a pretty simple device so it all boils down to bearing and seal quality or in the case of a completely new pump metal quality and machine work accuracy.
The problem with high flow pumps is that sometimes they're too high flow. They run the coolant through the radiator too fast, and don't allow for enough cooling. They can actually cause overheating.
I just put a new NAPA pump on mine a couple of weeks ago. I thought it looked great untill I went to bolt on the alternator bracket. The tube that goes to the heater hose was bent correctly but was rotated about 20 degrees to the left too far. This prevented the braket from fitting. I was able to grab on to it and turn it with my hands and have my fingers crossed that it dosen't leak. So far so good!
