Hello all.
I just picked up a '70 ford crewcab, 4wd, shortbed and really wanna do the old girl right. Anyhow, it currently has a 4 speed tranny and I wanna install a C6 behind the 390. I don't really wanna change the steering colum so I would be willing to put in a nice floor shifter for the new c6. What all do I need to accomplish this besides the new c6?. Oh, and what years of c6 will work with the 390? Just wondering if there were good comprehensive directions somewhere on the net for accomplishing this!
you'll need to find a C6 that was behind a 352/360/390 as the bolt pattern is different, you'll need the flywheel from the same motor that the C6 comes off of, and the throttle linkages. You will also need to hook a vacuum line to the trans too.
70, The FE uses a round top bell tranny and the C6 is a one piece case, with no year differences that I am aware of. You have two choices,
1- find a FE bell 4X4 C6 tranny or
2- have a FE bell C6 case and swap the 4X4 tail shaft from another 4X4 C6 case
All other connection concerns up front will be the same. You will need to remove the pilot bushing from the crank, and swap a flexplate in for the flywheel. 2wd & 4wd gear selector, and kickdown rods will be the same.
I think I am correct, All transfer case mount points are the same to the tranny.
I know it is sad to say, but I don't know which one I have yet. I will run down a little later and write down which one it is. I do know this though, the guy I bought it off of said the mileage on the title was correct at right around 56,000 actual miles.
Ok, went down and looked and from what I can tell it is a Dana Spicer 24. Is that a good thing? It looks hell for stout....Fling, any idea on shipping cost?
Trucks with a manual trans will have the front crossmember riveted in vs auto
trans trucks bolted in. Manual to auto your trans will have to go out the front (pull motor) unless you drill the rivets and add bolts to remove the crossmember. Auto to manual, no problem.
