so it was the speed sensor that was the problem rather than one of the 2 rear abs sensors ??? Why would the speed sensor set off the abs light? the speed sensor is $20 ish but the abs sensor is $100 ish.

Just to clarify it was the speed sensor that sits on the diff that you changed correct?

i just put a code reader on the truck .. sure enough the code reader says "no codes" in spite of the fact that the ABS light is on. Sound like the speed sensor ??

Ford had a problem in their parts catalog for the rear sensor... it listed the wrong part number... just get an experienced part guy... he'll know the correct number off the top of his head, and they'll probably have about 50 in stock.

The speedometer and computer are run off a sensor in the transmission... only the ABS uses the info from the rear differential sensor (at least on the new-design explorers), so the sensor can go bad and you'll still have speedometer function.

And the sensor is about $25-$30...
also you might want to put a little dielectric greast in the connector.. just to be safe.. a lot of water and dirt gets flung up there.

Good luck!

Your code puller only scanned the engine codes... ABS is a whole different computer and can't be pulled with a generic OBDII scanner.
