Will Not idle and dies unless you race the engine
I have a 96 ford Explorer with a bunch of miles 194k to be exact. It has been running fine for the most part. Every once in a blue moon when I started it it would idle realy rough but would recover if I applied more fuel and then would be fine. Well yesterday on the way home from work it just died with out warning. This happend when i was coasting up to a red light. just lost power. Put it in N tried to restart and it tried to run but would just run really really rough like it was flodded out. One time I was able to pump the gass pedal and get it to run at about 3000 rpm and it was fine. As soon as I let off the gas and tried to put in in drive it again started to idle really rough like it was flodded and then again died. I coasted to a parking lot and let it sit for a few hours. Went back and it started right up and I drove it home and parked it. Since it died just a short distance from home. Any thoughts on what it may be? Possibly the IAC?

Well Replaced the IAC drove it around on Saturday and it died on my twice. Was going down the highway at about 60 and it just started loosing speed gave it goes and no response it was dead. Was able to get to the side of the road turned ignition off. Heard the fuel punp presurize tried to start no go. Cycled the key again started up. Headed back down the hiway got about another 5 minutes down the road did the same thing. Was able to restart once I cycled the ignition. Was in a bad spot with lots of traffic and no place to really pull over if it happend again so I called for a tow. Let engine idle with the AC on full blast with no isses for over 20 min while I wated for the Tow truck. So I am really at a loss at what it might be now....

MASS AIR FLOW... sits between the air filter and the engine.
CAREFULLY remove the 4 safety-torq screws that hold it down, pull it up, being careful not to tough the elements (almost looks like the inside of a light bulb)
Use a fine mist of carb cleaner to clean it off... sometimes i've found bugs stuck on it and stuff... just be careful removing it as the elements break very easily...
Reinstall... i bet your problem will be fixed...
You might try unplugging it and driving it, to see if it runs better, although it will probable set off your check engine light. I wouldn't drive it long term like that, just long enough to see if it helped.
Good luck
