Transmission swap

Ok....I'm in the process of doing a tranny swap....I've got a 1988 F150 with a 300 I-6. The mazda 5 speed took a crap on me so I've decided to go with putting a C6 from a 1989 Bronco for a swap. I plan on putting an aftermarket shifter, so I shouldn't have to much of a problem getting the shifter to work. My concern is now with the automatic, connecting the kickdown lever to the EFI. Mr. Chilton says there is a cable that is used for that procedure. Well, I need the brackets and cable since this didn't come with either and the guy at the yard said the truck was crushed some time ago. The other boneyards around here either don't know what I'm talking about, they don't have what I need, or they toss the cables after pull the tranny's and engines. The dealer said that Ford discontinued the brackets December of last year. Does anyone have a set of brackets they'd be willing to sell? If so, If you have the cable to, I'd gladly take it also. Fortunately they had a flywheel for the trans...It looks like the worst part will be hooking up the cables and adjusting them....should be a piece of cake to do the swap otherwise....(knock on wood) Thanks!

Phil,
You may want to double check which tranny you are insatalling.I dont think Ford (unfortunately) was still using the C-6 tranny in the Bronco in 89. the C-6 was used almost exclusively through 79 then they went to the C-5 through 86. AODs were also used from 80- 95 in some applications, and E4ODs from 89 - to present. The C-6 is a very good choice for almost any application, and I believe that Ford still used them in some applications into the 80s,but mostly in big block, and heavy duty applications.I would think that your 89 Bronco would have an AOD or E4OD.

Just for info, According to Hollander Interchange Ford used the C-6 trans all the way through 1991. It is the same trans used from 1978 through 1991 in a pickup and from 1975 through 1991 in a van.

My '82 F150 with 300 I6 had the C6 from the factory. Don't know about other years, though.

Kickdown cable: You can get the cable and brackets from Lokar out of Nashville if you need them. Both require some setup as they tend to be universal (over a range of years for the Ford) in application.

Well, that's what I thought too, but where I got it from is a pretty reputable place, although expensive as hell most of the time.....they take care of their dealerships and garages before they wanna help the little guy....then give him the shaft. I guess I got lucky on this one. They tag everything as it comes out and everything is put on file....kind of a slick operation compared to others that are around here...everyone else is maybe we have it, come and look....if we don't oh well.

Dave,
Could you double check your books, just for future reference.I was talking about 4 WD applications, when Ford went to the Borg Warner trans cases,I beleive they went away from the C-6,this was all being driven bt the governments requirements for better fuel economy, especialy in 1/2 ton non exempt trucks. This meant they needed to go to overdrive trannies and fuel efficient T cases, which ruled out the C-6 and NP 205/203/ and 208 T-cases.Vans and 3/4 and 1 tons would have been exempt at different times in different states.By 89 any 4 WD would have been equipt with a Borg Warner T-case which I thought would rule out a C-6 tranny(although the BW T cases can be adapted to a C-6 with a few linkage tweaks). Just curriouse.

You should have a cable or a solid rod running from the driver's side of your carb down to the shift lever on your tranny (also on the driver's side). If you don't have it, then you typically will not downshift to second when you punch the accelerator trying to pass a car.

Hey Jeff,

I'll admit that when I first checked I did not look for 4WD, but I rechecked this morning and found that the Bronco FS and Ford pickup 4 X 4 did infact come out with a C-6 all the way through 1993. Though available, I have not seen one in our yard yet after 1987.

Well I ordered a B&M Unimatic shifter at the local parts house....paid more than I wanted, but it was the cheapest and longest shifter I could find...The guy tried to sell me a $300 shifter, told him he was nuts....It should do the trick....
Monday I will let you guys know how it's going.....gotta work 2nd shift this weekend so I won't get a lot done, but I may have the auto in by Sunday....Later

It has a cable and not a kickdown rod. That's why.
