K&N or any other aftermarket air filters

Fellas
Just curious to know if K&N or any other type of aftermarket air filters reccommended for an 04 F-150. I have 9K and I'm closing in on my 10K mile servicing.

I put a K&N in about the first or second week I had the truck. You can get them most autoparts stores. I switched to AEM Brute Force which comes with its own little K&N looking filter.
The K&N seems to help the mileage, a small amount.
Helps the power slightly also.
On a 5.4 I think I would swap in an intake rather than just change the filter.
On a 4.6 just changing the filter to a K&N is a pretty good deal.

I put just the k&n drop in filter in my '04 @ 5k, the seat of the pants test, there was a little difference, maybe some difference, the mileage difference was .3-.5 mpg in town, on the hwy I get 2 mpg better than stock. it was 39.99 @ autozone. The truck sounds a little better......I am checking into intake systems to see if that does any better. Current looking @ AEM MIT intake tube for 96.00 and then would only be about 140.00 for the whole intake system.

Ive read a couple of times on this forum that some intakes can allow dirt to pass through to the engine, namely the K&N. Is there any validity to this? When I get my truck this is the first thing I planned on doing but now Im having second thoughts

Depends on who pays for the study...
David Vizard, a noted expert who is not on any makers payroll, did some tests a few years ago. He found the K&N to filter better than any of the other brands, as well as flow more air, even when dirty.
Later many of the manufacturers 'borrowed' a few design features from K&N. Look at the 4.6 filter stock in the F-150. Looks more like a non-oiled K&N than anything Ford made a few years ago...
Almost all the intake makers use a K&N kind of design.

Some tests on some vehicles suggest you might flow more small dirt particles with a less restrictive filter. But how dangerous are particles that small? We are talking talcum powder sizes. And how real were the tests? Again, there are a lot of 'sponsored' tests done. Many passed off as 'research' many others passed off as private citizens, who just happen to do thousands of dollars worth of work and months of testing, just out of the goodness of their hearts...

Any way, I have used them on a couple dozen vehicles, and never seen or heard any evidence they are bad for my engines. I have heard a bunch of 'my friend's uncles friend is an expert and he says they are bad stuff'. But then, I've heard that about EVERYTHING,

You pays your money, you takes your choice.
