Hey guys, just bought my first FORD 4x4 as a toy and a learning experience. It's a '94 f350 body mounted on a lifted '83 f250 chassis but with alot of the '94 suspension pieces. But the guy i got it from didn't know much about and couldn't afford to run/keep it and hadn't had it long. So i got it for a good price, again just as a weekend toy and a definite learning tool.
So the problem is that since it's a bit of a "frankenstein ford" he couldn't tell me much about the parts or the years. SO it's supposed to be a 460 but i don't really know. How can i tell which engine and year, and where exactly is the serial number on the engine. And no not all the numbers match up from the dash, to the door sticker etc etc.
The headers have a leak, so i wanna try and change gaskets tomorrow to see it that'll be an easy fix. But obviously need to know what engine and what year.

Well, there should be a number code of sorts on the heads. Look between the 2nd & 3rd exhuast port, just under the lip of valve cover. You should find a sequence like this letter-number-letter-letter - "XXX". The XXX might not be there. For example, mine says "D3VE-A2A". Post back what that number is when you find it. It'll tell you at least what year the heads are and what there from. Wish i could be of more help.
Yep, the heads at least are a '93 truck head for a 460. Of course thats EFI. Look at the trucks intake, its completely diferent than 302/351 intakes. Where you would expect to find a carb on an older motor, the EFI 460 has a square "tower" coming up. The throttle body is mounted on the front side of that, facing forward, with the intake tubes coming forward, then left to the air box.
I can't say for certain, becuase I haven't spent anytime crawling around the EFI motors, but I don't think your going to find any kind of serial number. If there anything like the older blocks, your just going to have to find the number code for other parts of the engine. The newest part will tell you that its atleast that year or newer.
**I wonder why he went to the trouble to put a newer motor into an '83 chassis? I would think the point of that body swap would be to have a carb'd motor?
Thanks for the head thing. I can't remember if i mentioned that it was on propane, for four-baggin', so it does have a carb/mixer they call it. Well at least i know that it is a 460, and i can get to that header/exhaust leak problem. Thanks Franken...
