I only have 2 X 4 Ford (68) but the Rover (95) 4 X 4 has the old wiper ball style front axles. They always leaked 90 wt oil. The factory up grade has a lube called "One Shot" which is a moly base like vasoline at room temp but becomes liquid above that temp. No leaks and many owners have gone over 300K highway / off road miles no problem. I hope I helped, not confused.

Are you talking about putting oil in the closed knuckle chamber behind the tire? If so put a good all purpose grease in there. Oil is too thin and leaks out. People say use oil but many others say grease. If full it will get splattered up on the king pins. I have used oil for over a year and all the parts look like new still. Just top it up every oil change. If you aren't talking about this area then I am confused....

The axle should have a tag off of one of the diff pan bolts and if not it should also be stamped on the housing somewhere. If it is a Dana 60(which it should be) it will also be the same size as the rear. Unless you have a huge Dana 70 in the rear.

I believe that only the D44HD was a closed knuckle axle- check the diameter of the axle tube, if it's over 3", it's a D60, if it's 2 3/4", it's a D44HD.

You can also check to see if the metal tag is still there - should be attached to one of the diff cover bolts.
