I recently bought a 79 CC 4x4 with a 460 and the C6. I need overdrive bad.
Lots of freeways around here. I know there is the Gear Vendors option out there for the overdrive. Is there any other option out there that would give me an overdrive. I tryed searching around but I didnt see any other threads that talked about it. Also I want to stick with the automatic.
Thanks
JC
As far as automatic overdrive the the 460 - forget it... it will cost you lots of $$$$ ($2500 at least) and in the long run you MIGHT get an additional 3-4 mpg. If you do the math you probably won't make up for the $2500 or so for a few years...
Other options would be to change your gear ratio in your axles or even go to a larger diameter tire size. These would drop your RPM. However, since I see you drive a 4X4, you may not want to do that for when you go offroading. On the other hand, if you have 4low on when in 4 wheel drive, you could still crawl pretty darn good for offroading, depending what all your gear ratios are.
I thought about that, I am running 35 inch tires know. I know this helps, I was told by a friend that if I went to a lower gear than the 410 the truck would be a pig when towing. I dont know if this is true or not, any ideas.
I still dont know anything about this ZF 5 speed?
I have 4.10 gears with 33 in tires on my '79 F350 4X4 with a 400. Although it is a standard tranny with 1st gear being a granny gear, it still pulls really good. I routinely pull a weighted down trailer. My only change was going to a bigger tire as the gears were stock. My rpm's dropped a bit, but that was all. Really, IF you notice a diffrence you will just have to change your driving style a bit.
the zf is a 5sp used in 88 and up f250 and f350. it has the following gear ratios, 4.14, 2.37, 1.42, .77 .i may be off on the first gear ratio. so you get ratios that closely match a c6 while adding a granny gear and overdrive. a c6 has ratios of 2.46, 1.46, 1.
