Red face 1978 F350 emissions diagrams.

I just purchased a 1978 F350 2wd super camper special in Oregon, but live in CA. I need to get it smog legal.. Anyone know where I can get a diagram of the emission parts and routes of the tubing for this truck? None of my repair books has any great detail in this area.

Stop right there !

You need specific information first .

Answer these first

Engine ?
Rear End ratio ?
Type of trans ?
Elevation the truck will be running at.?

Then I will get back to you.

The autozone spot is tough to find.

Thanks Dennis,

Engine: 400 cu. in
Rear End Ration? I really don't know. It was used to carry a large cab over camper before I purchased it 3 weeks ago.
Transmission: C6
Elevation: Most of the time between 500-1000 ft elevation. Sometimes at 7-8,000.
Other: This truck probably came with an aluminum colored air cleaner housing, a fuel evaporative cannister, egr, and the hot air tube connected to the exhaust manifold. At least that is how it came in the 1979 which I also own, but have out of state. Since it is not available to examine up close, I am having difficulty with the smog certification in California, where I am trying to register the truck. I had hoped to get a diagram of all the components and how they are connected to each other. Thank you in advance for any help I can get.Robert

Hi Robert,

Million referred you to my thread and I thought I would add a few comments. Since yours has a fuel evaporative cannister and hot air tube (I assume you mean air injection for an air pump), your set-up is very different from mine. Mine has a 400 but it is a NON-CATYLAST and you will note by the other comments the emissions equipment is very different from application to application. I looked at the AutoZone site and did not find a comparable diagram for my set-up. Both diagrams that Million posted are different than my set-up. The last diagram he posted was helpful though, since it included a pic for the routing for a VVA with two VCV's. With it, I was able to fix a routing error from the VVA to the VCV (BTW, VCV = Ported Vacuum Switch or PVS in the Haynes or Chilton books). Suggestion: If your system is the same as your 79, you might find some help at AutoZone after all. Their diagrams for the 400 are all 1979 model.

I honestly hope that helps.

I found the pictures and diagrams very helpful. I'm very grateful for your help. My 78 F350 does not need an air pump, nor the catalytic converter. My 79 F250 did have the catalytic converter. The F350 is over 7500GVW and so has different requirments, but all of the vacuum stuff, and pcv, egr etc are still the same. I've been going to wrecking yards to get parts that the dealer no longer has available. I found the evaporative cannister removed from this truck and luckily found one still intact in a yard. THe pics are very helpful because I will know now what to look for in my hunt, and how they connect to each other.

As you may know, CA has the most stringent emission rules in the nation and to me is very burdensome, but I can't get it registered here without following the rules, . . .so thanks again for all of your help.

I scanned and uploaded the diagram you need. Follow the trail to my 300CID site. It's listed under emissions->others.

tirch, most likely, the goodies and do-dads you need are a junkyard only item. Knowing what you need and what it looks like can aid finding the part on a junkyard motor (even if it's not the same size). Unfortunately, most of these older trucks don't have the diagrams in the engine bay. If you can figure out your specific calibration code for your rig, post it. The '79 schematics still list part numbers. You can always try the dealer if you know the part number. I have the '79 schematics to share.
Cheers.
