I recently had trouble starting my 2000 E-150 van and suspected the IAC (with the help of this website!). I removed the IAC and cleaned it with carb cleaner then blew it dry with compressed air and replaced it. Starting was better but became I had intermittent trouble after a week or so. I removed again and found that the rubber seal was sticking to the hole it seals. The check engine light didn't come on and it checked out electrically. The problem was mechanical not electrical and I fixed it by cleaning it again and then spraying lightly with
WD-40 and then blowing it off again. It has been 10,000 miles and no problem. I've seen this type of things with other electro-mechanical devices. Electrical troubleshooting indicates that it is working so it is easy to think it must be something else yet replacing it fixes the problem. Just thought I'd post this to help someone figure out there problem.
IACs can be a bit temperamental.
It seems that there is no good indication of how long cleaning it will help for, if at all.
Sometimes after cleaning they will go for a long time, sometimes they wont.
Were you able to pinpoint that the IAC was the problem by holding the throttle open a bit while starting or?
It wouldn't idle after turning over so I suspected it and researching the forums I found a lot of posts about it (including pics) so I worked on it. It is also an easy item to remove even in that tight little cave the motor is in. As soon as I cleaned it it idled fine.
