I have an 88 E-150 4.9L and love it. I have 2 issues and hope I can find the answer here.
During the hot weather the van never starts on the first try, always the 2nd try, then stalls and will restart. After the start in the hot weather if I turn the A/C on the engine surges from about 400 rpm to 1200 rpm until I start to give it gas, and fan the gas pedal until the idle stabilizes.
It is a 5 speed standard tranny, and the surge is annoying, especially on take offs, if the A/C compressor should cycle.
This never happens in cold weather. I replaced the TPS and Idle Air Control Valve, which were given to me from a friend who had them new from a truck he sold and never used them.
Any ideas as to what it can be? I ran a Sunpro code scanner and came up with no codes.
Iam sort of having the same problem with my 88 E-250.Some days it runs great, and on others its just to bad to even try to drive. When i go to start it first start of the day it will run then stall out on me.It will start wright back up with no problems. Then it will start chokeing out,and i have to keep my foot on the gas so it will not stall.I can hear the electric fuel pump on the gas tank go on just before i turn the motor over,It sounds like your stomach when your hungry, and some thing else to under the hood.I replaced the fuel filter four days ago and there was no air pressure in the fuel lines. There was a small bend on the fuel line near the tank.I fixed that and it ran good for about a half hour then started to choke out again. When this happins the oil pressure gos down to and the motor gets real hot,but not over heat or even close. Also it starts spitting wite and black smoke untill it starts to run better.I have what looks like a some sort of fuel pump also above the fuel filter, and a canaster about 2 feet before it closer to the fuel tank. They all connect to the fuel lines.?Help
