Question Fuel tank sizes?

On an 88 f150, see sig for details, are the tanks both 19 gallons each? Becuase when I put the new fuel pump/sending unit in, the guy at napa asked if i had 19 gallon or 17 gallon tanks, and I thought I read somewere they were both 19 gallon tanks, so I got a pump/sending unit for a 19 gallon tank. I dont want to run out of gas basically, and I was wondering if all tanks on these trucks are 19 gallons. also if it is a 17 gallon tank, will it still read E when empty and just go past full when I fill it up?

I have the same truck as you, tha front tank is 19 gallons & the rear is 17 gallons.
I think the only difference in the senders is the one for the 17gal. tank would be a little bit shorter causing the gauge to read empty when you still had 2 gallons left.

LOL - I don't know about you but I can go another 75 miles after the guage reads empty on either tank, probably another 5 gallons in there past empty. All stock 94 F150 5.0 4x4

Yeah, you probably don't have dual 19's. Those were only on the F350s with an extended cab and longbed, I believe (perhaps some others, but not on F150s).

I changed out the front tank on my truck a couple of years ago and it turns out I have the smaller size tank on my truck because of it being a regular cab long box 4x4. Of course the smaller tank costs more, go figure.

yeah I'm kinda angry, because I went through all that work to put in the new sending unit/ pump, and my dad told me I need to drive it until i run out of gas so i know when it actually is empty,so I drove around until it was below E and it still wasnt empty...so I said screw it, I'll just get gas when its on E just to be safe. I just want an accurate fuel gauge!!!

Schmids- You better check for sure what tank you have. My 89 F-150 has dual 19's. Seems like I've read that there may be a difference on short box trucks. But I don't remember exactly where I saw that.

Hmmm. Maybe you could check with a body shop, or the dealer.

I had a big surprise from FOMOCO themselves in atranny question. COuldn't figure out if I had T-18 or -19, as I'd gotten some conflicting info. I knew it was geared higher then the NP435 that I'd had in my 84. So I registered in the owner area on the Ford website, and asked them. About 10 days later, I got a phone call from a guy at Ford, and he verified my tranny, and gave the gear ratios for it.

I think all the rear tanks are the same, it's the fronts that are different. Short beds I think came with the 17 gal. tank and longbeds came with 19. My longbed came with the smaller tank. It leaked and I bought the 19 gal. that was supposed to be in it. The new tank was about a foot longer than the old one.I had to unbolt a crossmember that was in it to put the longer tank in.

I Checked the Haynes manual and my 92 owners manual, and I can't find any codes on the door sticker that identify tank sizes. I think the only way to know exactly what you have is by reading the tank capacity chart in your owners manual for your truck.
This may not help, but here is what the 92 F-series owners manual says.
All long beds are listed as having 19gal fronts and 18 gal. rears. The 19/19 option only applies to F350's and up.
My 92 long bed tanks are 19/18 and there is a visible difference in the shape of the tanks. I would imagine Ford would use the same part number tank if it was installing 19/19. If Ford didn't do that, then there are three kinds of tanks available two 19's and an 18.
So, do your tanks look different?
Edit: There is a footnote about the F150 longbed W/Regular cab front tank on trucks equipped with 4x4 option, I think the front tank is smaller (16.5 gal) could this be because of the transfer case taking up space?

Oh yeah. The front tank is a long rectangle, maybe 15x17. The rear tank is a big square about 8-10 inches deep. The difference between the 17 and 19 for the front tank would be in it's length, like vman says. By crawling under a truck and looking at an 18 or a 19, you'd probably be hard pressed to find big differences. I would imagine that ford used either the same top or bottom for the rear tanks, with the other half of the clamshell being slightly deeper for the 19.

You might send frederic a note to see if he'd get or if he took a depth measurement on his rear tank while he has his bed off. One of the other guys on frederic's rust fixing thread was talking about doing his frame also, and he had a lighter truck. Maybe he'd get a measurement too.

I know I've seen 35 gal rear tanks listed in JC Whitney. I'd guess that they're similar to a bronco tank, in that they take up the same space as a regular rear tank but are deeper. That may affect your departure angle if you wanted to go for one of those.

I'll check my owners manual and see what it says. I dont really care for the rear tank, it leaks, it's rusted/rusting, and the fuel pump & sending unit are dead.

One more wrench in the works could be a canadian built truck which uses the imperial
measurement instead of standard. The front and back tanks are a few gallons smaller
numerically but are larger in volume. When you figure out volume ,find out where the
truck was made.

Well I looked in my manual and it says the front tank is 19 gal. and the rear is 18.2 gal. The truck was made in Canada, so I'll take a look at their measurments i guess.
