Looking at an 04' Explorer !

Thinking of trading in my 97' Expedition, with 125 k on it, for a 04' Explorer, New (leftover), it's an XLT, 4.0, 2" hitch, trailer tow package, 3:73 LS, 6 CD 290 watt, adjustable pedals, reverse sensing, 3rd row seat, there seeming to make a good deal on the 04'.

Just want to know if any one has any problems with there 04' Explorer's, or things I should be advised of ??

Thanks for any info on this !,,,,,,,Later,,,,,,,Mark

Check to see if the tranny additive was done. Also, some people (myself included) have had problems with the clutch packs in the LS rear end.

The dealer can tell by the VIN whether or not that Explorer needs the tranny additive (it's a friction modifier that was supposedly left out of the factory fill; it keeps solenoids from sticking).

M350,
Go for the v-8 if you can find one. My wife has an 05 and just got rid of an 03 and has had the 4.6 in both. The v-6 is a DOG!!!!! The v-8 is only a $ 500 option if that. The power is unbelievably more and the mileage is the same or better. My wife averages 17.5- 18.5 on the e-way. Several friends have the 4.0 and average around 18 and all wish they would have gotten the 4.6 liter. That's my $.02

my wife has an 04 with the V8 in it we took a 4000 mile trip in it when it was new averaged 17.5 mpg at freeway speeds between 70 and 90 most of the way. her daily commute to work is 20 miles each way averages 19.5 mpg with just her driving love the power that thing has.

The little bit better gas mileage with the V6 won't wipe the grin off your face if you get the V8!!!

That is innacurate. The V6 has adequate power. Of course the V8 is the preferred way to go but as V8s go, that V8 is nothing to write home about. And while its only a $500 option, rest assured those with the V8 will have many other options as well and typically are the higher end models.

whats so inaccurate. the mileage estimates are accurate. the power is much more. and compared to the v-8 the v-6 is a dog. there is nothing inaccurate about what was said. it's called an opinion as was yours. i was merely stating facts to back it up.

I think I would stick with the V8. The difference in MPG is only 1 MPG beter with the V6, thats based on the stated MPG on the widow stickers. Also not sure if the timing chain guide issues with the V6 have been corrected with the '04.

Looking at an '04 Explorer!

I have the 4.0 V-6 in mine & it does just fine. Comparitively speaking, it's much better than the 4.6 was in my old Expedition. I get 20-21 mpg (best of 21.3 so far) on the average but I'm easy on the gas pedal. Long term maintenance on the 4.6 regarding spark plug access and cracked & rusted exhaust manifolds left me no love for the V-8 in this case.

Well, thanks to this great site and all the great response, I did the deal tonight ,,and the winner is,,,,,,,,,,,Explorer NBX 4.6 V-8, 3:73 LS, Fire red, with the midnite grey interior , 7 passenger, took it for a ride,,aaaawwww baby love that sound,,and it runsss goooooooooooood,, when we took it out it had 22 miles on it.

I am trading in my Expediton with the 5.4,so I know what your taking about with the spark plugs Foxfire,,but the v-8 (4.6) in the Explorer is much easier to reach the plugs,I put my fingers right on all the plugs, with out even climbing, engine is no where near as buried as in the Expedition, that was my main concern, with the V-8, and its a pc of cake!,,,,, thanks to all,,,,,,,Later,,,,,,,Mark
