Ok, mine are el-cheapos - Hooker Comps, two years old and full of rust. Getting ready to bolt them back up to my aluminum heads and want to make sure I use the right gaskets for these heads. Seems strange to me that the entire surface of the flange doesn't mate up to the head - there's about a 1/4 inch wide area around each tube entrance that is slightly raised - so looks like this is the only part that actually fits up to the head - the rest of the flange area would stand off of the head just a hair. That make sense? Anyways, which gasket is gonna work better here?
That is normal to have just a ring of the tube make contact. It is only essential to seal one spot not the whole flange area. Look at a head gasket. The area that actually seals the combution chambers is just the narrow ring on the inner part of the cylinder hole. As far as the best header gaskets I don't have experience with aluminum heads other than on rice burners and they will often use the mesh and fiber type.
Its common for some headers to just have a sealing ring around the port....Its Much easier to get a small area around the port to seal than it is the whole Flange !!
I have used headers both ways.....and havent ever had a sealing problem with any...
My headers have the raised portion to seal and I just dont get it. I have tryed all gaskets made, and none match. They overhang, and miss the flange, and will LEAK. The only fix was to make homeaid gaskets,
The Last time I replaced my header gaskets..Ijust used the stock gaskets, the ports were smaller than the ports on my headers....Like I had said ,I run Hedman 1 7/8 primary's...and after running the engine for a bit..the extra gasket material just burned out to size of the Header port!! (NO LEAKS)
