I have an 81 F-100 w/ 4-speed overdive. VIN indicates this is Clark-4 speed OD. The driver's side of the trans is stamped: Ford RF-D9BR-7006-AB
C-2604194. Ford dealer says that is number for Ford 4-speed Overdrive. Passenger side of trans has tag with following: RUG DT LA22 EITR CB 1989.

Are Ford 4-speed OD and Clark 4-speed OD the same thing?

Here's more confusion: the trans code chart in my chiltons (pg 1-9) lists a clark 4-speed OD (Ford 4-speed OD is not even listed for any year) but on page 7-3 it mentions a Ford RUG 4-speed OD, never discusses clark 4-speed. Things that make you go Hmmmmm?

Am I reading too much into this and the transmissions are the same? If I want to buy an overhaul kit, what do I buy - er, for which transmission?

I know some of you guys know the answer - and I appreciate your time and help.

I can't swear to it but I think they must be the same. My 1980 VIN indicated a Clark, but casting is marked Ford and I have the same type of numbers you indicate. Likely build by Clark for Ford. I know my Carb has lettering on it indicating that it was manufactured by Carter for Motorcraft. Likely same type of thing.
