Are 5.13s the lowest gears available for the Sterling 10.5?

I have done an extensive search on the internet and forum and found the lowest gears available for the Sterling 10.5 to be 5.13s. Is this the case or am I missing something?

The Dana 60 had a few lower options. 5.38, 5.86, 6.17 and 7.17.

Does anyone else have any knowledge of lower gears available for Sterling 10.5?

Is it true that pinion shaft size becomes smaller and weaker on 4.88/5.13 gearsets than 4.56 and up? Or does this affect other axle setups?

How well will Locked Dana 60s and Sterling 10.5s hold up w/ 40-46" tires on an 8000 lb truck? What will break first?

Due to the size of the rig, it will be limited to sand dunes, mud pits, maybe some small rocks.

Experiences and opinions appreciated!

Thanks for the help,
Jaz

5.38s have been available for the 10.5" rear as well.....although I know of a few people looking for them for a while now and every place has them on backorder.
More places carry the 5.13s....and I know they had been on backorder, not sure if they still are.

The pinion gear becomes smaller with the lower gear ratios......AFAIK pinion shaft size is the same.

Locked front and rear I'd say outer shafts, u-joints and locking hubs on the 60 would most likely be first things to go......all depends on how hard the truck is used and how big of tires get put on, and the weight of the tire/wheel combo (40" MT/Rs on 17x10 Welds is a whole lot lighter than 46" XMLs on 20x10 beadlocks).

hello cleatus I can't find your post in the diff forum. I have an 03 f350 and it currently has 5.13 gears in it now. Will 5.38 gears or lower work. It has the 10.5 rearend. It had the 10.25 kit ring pinion till differential broke

Everyone covered the questions already but that heavy of a truck with that kind of tire a suggestion toward rockwells isn't a bad idea especially if you are making any kind of power.

Just out of curiosity, why are you going to 5.38 gears? There is very little difference between 5.13 and 5.38. Are both chunks needing a rebuild?

I'm running 53" Michelin tires. A daily driver. Ran awesome with the 46" it would run with cruise at 75 on turnpike. I pull camper, boats car trailer loaded down.
now I have the 53's on it and want lower gear ratio.
it's 6.0 powerstroke all tuned....... I been driving it a year now.

Your literally going to pick up 75 rpm at 70 mph. Just not worth the expense in my opinion.

I have a buddy running 53's Michelin's on a 2v v10 excursion. He tows his Jeep with it, and has driven it on several long distance road trips. He isn't running stock axles, and I can't remember what they are to save my life right now, but I'm pretty sure they are a 5.13's.

5.13's and 5.38 gears are same price. Mine are stock axles.. For being daily driver. Any pros or cons 5.13 vs 5.38. If I'll only be gaining 75 rpm. Would it be better to stay with 5.13

Post some pictures of this big rig!

If you already have the 5.13's in there right now, drive it with the new tires and see how it responds, see if you like the rpm. A 75 rpm difference wont even be noticeable accept for seeing it on the tach.

Here's your transmission ratio's. I find the transmission RPM calculator easy to use.
