Odometer Problem, won't roll over to 400,000

So our work truck, a 1995 Ford F-350 rolled over to 400K earlier this year and instead of 400K it rolled back to 300K. Why? It's now reading 318,000 when in all reality it's 418,000. This is gonna cause problems when we sell it, etc.

Maybe they never expected these trucks to go past 399,999 miles and therefore didn't program the odometer to go to 400,000. Kinda like the Y2K bug that was in computers a few years ago. Maybe we can call it the M400K bug or something.

I wonder what the difference in value is for a truck with 318k miles versus 418k miles? You might be able to make a killing downplaying the real miles on your truck.

Odometer cannot display 400,000

Next time you start the truck watch the odomoter. You'll notice all the digits will light up and it'll look like "888888". Except the first digit is missing a segment. That first digit doesn't even have the upper-left segment. It would be impossible for this digit to display a "4". I'm sure Ford engineers figured they could save 10 cents a truck by leaving off that that digit segment and less than 1% of owners would ever notice/care.

400,000...very impressive.

Remember the old days when you had to be suspicious of any used vehicle more than a couple years old that only had, 20 or 30 thousand miles on it. You had to wonder if it had 120 or 130 thousand. Guess now when you look at a used truck and it has 300,000 miles showing you have to wonder if it really had 400,000 500,000 or more on it.

Just curious, CaptainO, how much of this truck is original? What major work has been done to it? How does it run, etc.

It runs pretty good. I think right now it's got a leaky EGR valve or something. We're replacing the steering box today, as it's pretty much shot. The tranny, axles, everything else is orginal. Paint's flaking a little, and there's a little rust in the rear well wells, not much. I think the engine is the only major part, other then brakes, etc, normal wear items. The secretary has a folder on the truck that's damn near 2' thick I think. Nice looking green.

No one should be worried about selling a truck with over 400,000 on it. In IA the title has a place for "beyond mechanical limits" or not actual mileage for those vehicles that don't go past 99,999 - I suspect you have something like tha too.

If not, well then let's not be greedy, sounds like the truck has lasted 2 -3 truck lives and doesn't owe anyone anything. I'd push her to 500,00 and then put 'er on top of a 30' steel post so ppl can pay tribute to her!

No, it has the big V8.
Yeah, it doesn't owe us anything. I'm thinking of calling dibs on it and making a F-350/Bronco combo outta it. Just gotta convice Mrs. Captain Obvious.

We have a 97 F350 Powerstroke and everyone says this truck has almost 1 million miles and no engine work. Everyone I talk to has said the truck rolled over at 500,000 miles and now it shows it has 386,000 on it. It runs amazingly still.

Odometer Problem, won't go over to 400,000

my 1997 F350 just turned over 399,999 and the odometer read 300,000. It did not roll over to 400,000.

From everything I have seen the odometer on these trucks doesn't read any higher than 399,999 and rolls over at 400,000. It seem to just be the limit if its memory.
