Coolant Tank Overflowed?

Today i was looking under the hood and notcied that there is some residue around the coolant recovery tank. The residue looks like fluid that came out of the tank.

Now, the truck has never overheated. In fact, the temp guage usually never goes past the N in normal. I cant think of how this can happen. Maybe a bad t-stat?

The only problem with the truck is that it has an intermittant problem of dying after start-up. Thanks.

My 92 F150 would overflow the reservoir onto the ground when I got it and it had 96k miles--a new radiator cap fixed that problem.

I fill it to the "Cold fill" line when its dry. Is it a problem it keeps going dry? Or can I leave it alone?

Cruiseomatic,
It could be your resovoir has a leak and your radiator is fine. Find the leak and seal it (No biggie) or replace it. It might even be the rubber hose.

On the other hand you could have a leak somewhere else and you need to fix this. Letting the rad or block run out of coolant would be very bad. Getting antifreeze into the oil would also be very bad (leaking intake or throttle body)

Popa tim,
It held water for a day then dropped back down. It probably does have a leak in the hose, but The engine temp never gets past the N. Os I'm assunming she don't get hot. It has just a very very little bit in there still. How would i check if she has enough antifreeze?
Thanks. Sorry to hijack the thread.

Pop the radiator cap when its cool enough to open, You should have fluid right up to the bottom of the radiator cap mount I beleive.

Cheers,
Popa Tim
