I have a 1994 F-150 300-6 2WD E4OD 3.07 gear ratio. Two months ago, 1-2 started slipping so I took it in for a rebuild. Since I've gotten the truck back, the slipping is gone but it still shifts rather hard every now and then. It's especially harsh when I'm going from D-R-D like when doing a "K" turn. Also, there is a slight rattling sound coming from underneath the truck and it only happens in 1st gear when I hit the gas real softly and let it go. It seems to be coming from the area around the tranny. I have taken it back and the owner rebuilt it himself the second time, and the rattling sound is still there and he, quite honestly, told me he couldn't find where the sound was coming from. Then, he told me to keep driving it and if the sound got any louder that I could then bring it back and he might be able to pinpoint the problem then. It is also still shifting hard at times like before. It seems to be a reputable shop and the guy seems knowledgable. He gave me a 3-year warranty and told me to bring it back anytime. But since he is stumped, I thought I'd consult this forum as I think some guys here are pretty knowledgable too. Sorry it's long but any help or comments would be appreciated. This my 1st truck, 1st ford, and 1st f-150 and I love it and never going back. Please help.
Thanks Stuart1. I will definitely take this up with him to see what he thinks. I'm not very mechanically-inclined so a lot of the technical stuff don't make sense, but... do you think this could be causing the rattling noise, or do you think the noise is completely independent from the tranny? By the way, the noise was NOT there before the rebuild.
Also, the other day I was on the interstate and came almost to a stop because of an accident. I was creeping along for about 40 min. trying to get through it, and noticed that my tranny temp kept climbing. It finally had hit 220 by the time I cleared the accident and as I got up to cruising speed (70mph), it slowly came back down to just under 200. Is this normal for temp to get up that high when you're creeping along in traffic? I had been driving about an hour at 70-75mph and it was about 82 outside her in FL that day. I don't have a separate tranny cooler (hoses go through rad.). When coming out of Miami on a regular work day, it's about 5-6 mi. bumper to bumper and the temp has never gone up over 200. This was the first time I'd seen it go 220. And I didn't have a load or anything.
