Cost of powder coating

Anyone have an idea what it would cost to have a 9" rear end housing powder coated? Anyone have front suspension parts powder coated? Do the parts need to be cleaned or do most places clean em up before powder coating?

Similar requirements as paint. Needs to be clean or it will peel. Sticks VERY well to freshly blasted parts. Not sure about prices in CA, but there are a lot of folks starting small powdercoat businesses around here. Should keep the price in line.

We're back to that other thread though Ed. A quick degrease and coat of your favorite anti-rust paint looks damn fine from 5 feet away, and that's how most will be viewing your undercarriage. When it starts to look bad you can touch it up in an hour or two.

Agree with Fenders. Anti-rust paint works great and looks good at the cruise nights.

OK, OK, I can take a hint. I'll just clean it up and shoot the old rust-oleum on. Maybe it's just my time of the month? Ya think? LOL.... What would I do without you guys? LOL.... Ed.

Ed

Use satin paint on chassis parts. The fact that you hurried a bit won't show.

As far as your time of the month. Most all of us have a few depressed days on these projects. If you can think down the road after you are driving again. Imagine pulling your nine inch some weekend to have it powder coated. Slap in some new springs or whatever while it's at the PC shop. Back on the road the next weekend. There are things that need to be done right while you have things apart. This isn't one of them.

The last thing I had coated was a pedal car body. I brought it in clean and bare , and it cost $50. Not cheap by my standards. It doesn't take much time, but the powder isn't cheap.

I've had a hard time finding body shops to shoot piece parts. They all want auto insurance jobs. I have 7 sheet metal parts (4 are the grille/headlights) from the front of my F3. The clean and straight, and needed minor prep, prime, color, clear. The first shop that I found that would do it, wanted $800. I found a good shop that was slow to do it for $459. I'm happy with the results and will post some pictures soon. My radiator is out for recore, and needs to go back in before I bolt the sheet metal.

Here's a pic of mine after I Zero-Rusted it:

$8 bucks for an aerosol can and a $3 wire wheel. Not going to be a show truck and most of the housing is hidden anyways.

Goobzilla- Ask me, I think it looks pretty good in the photo. I guess it helps to pull the rear end out and paint it. Nice job. Looks show quality to me.

Hey Goobzilla, I see the broom. Be honest, did you sweep the floor before you took the picture to impress the guys.

On my suspension parts, including the rear end housing, power wire brush or sand blast, Eastwood spray can Rust Encapsualtor, then spray can chassis black. Came out great. Had my frame powder coated. The shop sand blasts first then coats.
