Rebuilt tranny has 10,000 miles on it lost reverse and overdrive. Shop will not honor 12,000 mile warranty as I had rebuilt in Delaware and now I'm in Washington state. Any ideas on what happened? Will a 1996 tranny work in an 1989?

 

Hmm.

I'd request that the shop send you a written copy of the warranty, with the 'out of state' reason highlighted.

If they cannot or will not - Small claims court can be effective.

Otherwise, check the simple stuff first - How does your transmission fluid look and smell? It should be pinkish red in color and not smell burned.

Also, if you can, I'd drop the pan and check for metal fragments near the pan magnet - A sign of internal transmission wear/damage.

Contact the Washington State Attorney Generals Office Consumer Affairs and Fraud Div. Most cities have an office and listed in local phone book. They are effective and efficient. If they feel there is merit in your case under Wa. consumer law, they will help you with the auto repair company. Auto repair shops are one of their higher complaint areas.
Usually only takes one letter from one of their case workers.
Do your homework first, copies of all work tickets, correspondence and repair warranty.
