I know it can be done, but how? I've really looked into a LPG conversion on my truck and have basically decided to do it EXCEPT for the whole refueling issue. It's my only reserve right now.

It would be really nice to be able to have a 100lb propane tank with a 20 gallon gas reserve so when the propane ran out I'd be able to switch and run on gas indefinitely if I was someplace without a LPG supply.

What truck/engine are you considering for conversion?

I have a '68 F100, 390+4speed, and would love to convert it to propane or dual-fuel. However, the kits seem to have dried up completely in recent years.

Five years ago, I heard about a guy in Sacramento CA who could provide parts and perform the conversion for about $1400, but I didn't follow up at the time. Would love to hear about any kits you find.

 

I can and will get some info on kits etc. I'm looking into propane on a 351 M. KNow a guy who did it with a 390 and I will eventually go that route. They have kits that put big tanks in bed wheel wells and along frame. I want to be able to fill at home with a standard residential tank and will be dual fuel. I have a '77 f150 with flatbed.

I already found that site, but a kit isn't what i'm looking for, more for theory and application (and i wouldn't feel right asking the guy this stuff, and then not buying anything off of him). I already have access to propane parts, it's a matter of implementing it while still maintaining my current carburetor.

I highly respect Roger's motives. I, however, am far more lazy, and would be very happy with a kit.

impco 33a front duel fuel kit is $400.00, the 425 kit is $500.00 then you need a service hose and a propane tank....roy

sounds fairly straight forward even for a dunce like me- He didn't get into theory or application much- I may have access to some parts.

 

A guy I know ran a Cobra Jet on propane, had a Impco 452 mixer, 13.5:1 CR and a good high torque cam, the shop estimated it at around 425 hp on propane. He had all this crammed into his hunting truck ('74 F-250 4x4 on 35's) All he told me for my engine was do 12:1 cr, and have a HUGE rad and fan, and let it breathe. So the way it seems if you go propane, build for it, don't bother with gas. Also know of a 454 chev that is running dual 425 mixers and a blower and getting 16mpg with 4:10 gears.

Are you sure that figure isn't 1.6 MPG? Or is that engine in a Austin Mini?

Anyhow, must be nice to get that kind of mileage on propane with a big block. I was only getting 8-9 mpg with a single mixer and normally aspirated 460... in a 6800# truck.

 

Well, supposedly as you build them up they get better, thats also what I'm hearing from a shop that has been in propane for 25 years here in town.

 

I have a 1976 f-150 4x4 with a 428 on propane since '88.

The propane guy is ok and I have bought parts from him he is just slow at responding sometimes, better to phone him.

I live in BC and it sounds like propane is a little more popular since gas is around $400 a gallon or 95c /litre.

was worth it when propane was cheap but not anymore

 

local propane is 1.52 home delivered as heating fuel and over 2.00 at the pump. Kind of dampens my propane enthusiasm. Will still keep it on my mind.

 

So how much is the propane compared to gas at the pump? Here gas is 92.9 cents per Litre, while Propane was 63.9 now down to 40.9 at the pump. Remarkably the truck I just bought has had about 300 Km put on it and the guage hasn't moved from 1/2 tank on a 200L tank.
