79 F-100 engine swap, Please Help
Anyhow, this is what I have.....
A 79 F-100 with an I6, automatic Transmission...(was origionally a Manual, not sure of origional tranny), it is a two wheel drive, and a short bed. Not sure of axel gears.
A 78 F-150 with a 351M with a four speed Two wheel drive, long bed. again not sure of axel gears.
Access to a salvage yard with pleanty of lincoln 460's
I want to do what I know is a common swap, but I have very little to work with budget wise. I am planning on buying a new flywheel and cluth package, and I would love it to work with my bellhousing. All in all I would like to use mostly what I have, nothing fancy just what works.
I know that this is a common topic here as well, but my searchs have not revealed any detailed instructions. Lol . When I am treading in new waters, I need lots of info. So if any one can point me in the right direction, or even consider contact through e-mail please let me know. It would be an imense help.
Thank you so much, for any help that you are going to give, or advice you can lend.
Andrew
The thing that is going to be a huge pain will be everything that bolts to the block. Car manifolds won't work for your application. You will need to find either truck or van manifolds. Also, your going to run in to problems with your accessories....(alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor. The alternator bracket from a car will have your alternator rubbing on your frame rail. The car may also use a different power steering pump and A/C compressor than what you have. Your stuff won't bolt to the brackets, and the car stuff won't hook up to your truck. The next problem is your going to need an oil pan from a truck or van. The car oil pan won't work.
If your trying to do this on the cheap....it can be done.....but your going to have to keep shopping around until you find the right parts. I would highly recomend holding out for a truck or van 460. It will make it a lot easier on your wallet. The engine that I have in my truck came from an 83 1 ton van, and I gave 600 for it and the c6 that was attached to it. I dropped them in my truck over a year ago and have had no problems.

You will also need either truck exhaust manifolds or headers, as mentioned above. The car passenger side manifold will hit the frame unless you notch it (Not recommended).
The car oilpan will work (it did on my 77), it just puts the drain plug in the cradle and kinda tight to get to.
The low mounted 100amp alternator also cleared the frame on mine. I used the 77 Mark V (donor car) PS set-up too, I just plugged the extra return port on the pump and used a coupler in the metal part of the high pressure line to use the car end on the pump and the truck hose on the gearbox end.
I did get lucky and got the PS pump and bracked later off of a 69 Mark that was the same as a truck.
As I stated in my first post I have a four speed mated to a 351M that I want to use, on the 460. I am going to try and find a 460 already connected to a manual transmission, but I am not going to hold on to hope on that one. lol. SO lets say I can only find automatic 460's. What is it that I will need to do, to the crank, and should I buy a flywheel for a 460, 390? and what clutch should I use.
Thanks again for all of your help.
You may try the 385 series forum further the main page. There are many knowledgable 460 members in there that should have the answer. Actually, I would do a search in that forum first, there are many threads on the subject.
