*&$% Plastic Clutch Master Cylinder Shattered!

The plastic rod on my Ford F150 Master Cylinder broke where the end goes over the clutch pedal shaft. Luckily while in a parking lot.

Is it possible to replace the shaft w/o replacing the master cylinder?

I need this vehicle since my other 2 are in project state right now(arggg!) If I have to replace the clutch master cylinder, does a metal replacement cost much more, and do I have to order it (i.e. wait)?

Someone at this site found a metal clutch slave cylinder, I think by Bendix. Maybe they also make a metal master cylinder. Let us know what you find out. I may be replacing my master cylinder soon as it is binding making it hard to smoothly engage the clutch.

I did some checking and I couldn't find a metal clutch MC. I was lucky I found a replacement at a local NAPA for $85. I cheated by only replacing the rod and bleeding the system, but everything seems find so far. Bleeding the system makes it seem like I have a new clutch.

BTW, the tow truck driver nearly guessed what happened with the clutch MC. Apparently he made a metal bushing to replace the nylon OEM version for his bosses truck. Supposed be a real problem for heavy clutched diesels.

Swapping out the clutch MC and bleeding the system should take ~2 hours. Not a big deal.

Thanks for the info. I had to replace the plastic bushing for the clutch rod and bought an extra for the next time. My truck is a 95, but on my old '84 the original plastic master cylinder, rod, bushing (if any), and slave are still working fine at 176,000 miles. Do they keep making these trucks cheaper every year?
