Fuel pump F250 460 1976 Camper Special
So, just spent the whole day messing with a fuel pump. I took off the old one and took it to the parts store. They can't match it up with anything. I know it is the original engine, it has 70K on it and I know the original owner. So, what is the deal? The pump that all the parts stores tried to give me is the same. It hits on the block of the engine/oil pan. Not enough clearance for the body of the pump. Help please!

Humm, to my knowledge in 1976 the 460 was not an option. If I am remembering correctly, all that were offered in '76 were the FE engines (360, 390, etc.). That was actually the last year the FE was offered too.
OK folks...please correct me if I am mistaken. We need to find this guy the right fuel pump...

Does the new pump look like the old pump? Does it fit in and just not line up with the bolt holes? I once fought with a fuel pump for over an hour. The holes wouldn't line up. Then I realized what the problem was. I bumped the engine over about half a turn and the fuel pump cam retracted and the pump lined up fine.

The fuel pump for a 429 will work as well.
It is different in the fact the metal actuator arm is longer than most.
I should be able to get you a aftermarket cross-over part number.
EDIT:
Fuel Pumps
Carter M -6618
ACDelco-41338
Airtex-6878
If anyone ever needs Part Number Application Information.
go here.

The truck is a 2wd Camper Special.
460 is original. Now the pump that is on it is a Carter 1932. Is that a useful number? I talked to the original owner. He said it is the original pump. I really want to get this handled tomorrow. I looked at every frickin pump I can find. please help if you can.

What about one of the rebuildable hi volume Holley fuel pumps. You can swivel
the bowl around in any direction. www.summitracing.com has them. Just a thought. They might not work either, I duno.

I have a 1976 F250 SC w/460 and had to replace the mechanical fuel pump as well. The one I took off said it was a Carter TM 0-2440 but I could not find that part available anywhere. It ended up being replaced with a Carter CRT-M60036. You can purchase them at www.summitracing.com for $17 or find them at AutoZone for $19. I hope this helps.

InfoWarrior, welcome to the forum! This thread is from 2005, so I would hope 72 Camper Special found a fuel pump in the last nine years! LOL!
Post up a new thread on your SuperCab. You will be able to post pics of it soon. Fun to look at old threads, but it's better to see and discuss your truck in the here and now!

OK, I know this is an old thread but I'm still not sure we have the right answer.
I have a '76 F250 Ranger with a 460. Much like the OP I need to replace the fuel pump. My fuel pump appears to be original and has the canister on the bottom w/ filter. That canister is offset away from the oilpan. I've tried Napa and Carquest and both of the replacements they sold me have the canister placed dead center causing it to hit the oil pan and not fit.
I decided to ask around and a local big block ford fanatic and ford mechanic for the last 27 years says it shouldn't have the canister. Im not so sure as everything on this truck is pretty dang original and the OP had the same issue.
Does anybody know the real story on this?
I will probably just purchase those described in the thread without the filter canister but I'm really interested in knowing which is correct?
Thanks for any info,
Jerry

I ordered a replacement fuel pump for my 76 camper special 460, M6618 from rock auto. It looked similar to the original, except the arm was straight, not bent, and one of the inlet/outlet holes was curved. It fit on and functioned but did not seal completely tight because it was contacting the oil pan/ lower rad hose. I pulled it out and looked at them more closely side by side after cleaning 40 yeas of oil off of the old one. There is a slight offset that allows it to clear the oil pan and rad hose, and looking more closely at the pictures on rock auto I clearly see that 3 are the incorrect pumps.
The AIRTEX 6618 is the correct pump for this engine (one of the pipes is curved, a bent arm, and an offset to clear the oil pan). It should be on the way to my house in the next few days..
